Who are we?

The Neighbors NYC is a New York City-based dance company that is rooted in Hip Hop among other afro-diasporic dance cultures and styles. Founded in 2013 by Esosa Oviasu and Kristian Nacional, The Neighbors is dedicated to facilitating its members’ artistic, athletic, and holistic growth through choreography, freestyle, competition, dance education, and community engagement. We are proud to have received numerous awards and to have hosted sold out showcases, but above all, we are proud to call ourselves your neighbors.

Is there an age limit?

We are an 18+ team.

How do in-person auditions work?

Upon arrival, you will receive an audition number. There are 2 combos you must learn and perform. After each one is taught, you will audition in small groups based on number order. Each group will go twice, switching windows between rounds.

After both combos are auditioned, there’ll be a cypher to close out the day! Participation is not a factor of auditions, but we encourage everyone to join in and dance with us, especially if you would like to show off skills and dance styles that aren’t represented in the audition combos.

How do virtual auditions work?

If you cannot make it in person, we will email you videos of the audition combos. You will receive them on Sunday, August 23 at 12:00pm. You have 24 hours to learn and record videos of you performing the combos. Please email your videos back to us by Monday, August 24 at 12:00pm.

If you can only make part of the audition, please email us at dance.neighbors@gmail.com and we will get back to you about a hybrid option.

What can I expect after auditions?

We will email out decisions fairly quickly. If you are invited to interview callbacks, those will take place virtually between Monday, August 24 and Thursday, August 27.

Any tips for auditions?

Be yourself and trust your training! Above all, we hope you feel welcomed and leave having learned a new move, met a new friend, or had a good time overall, regardless of results :)

P.S. Bring water, snacks, and come in clothing that you feel comfortable and confident in!

What is the rehearsal schedule?

On a weekly basis, we rehearse Sundays 5–8pm and Tuesdays 8–10pm, typically in lower Manhattan or Midtown. Closer to performances, we may add extra rehearsals. For those wanting to be in additional dance opportunities, extra rehearsals would take place outside the usual weekly hours. Our first rehearsal will be on Sunday, August 30!

Are there dues?

Yes, we have monthly dues around $45. As financial accessibility will always be a priority for us, we have a sliding scale structure and flexible payment plans, as needed.

What are the plans for 2026–2027?

We expect to partake in a mix of competitions, community events, and additional performance opportunities.
